1972 Datsun 240 Z
1972 Datsun 240 Z
For sale is a fantastic, very original example of the iconic Z car!
Seeking to compete head-to-head with established European sports cars, Datsun priced the new 240Z within $200 of the British MGB-GT in the United States, a five year-old design that showed its age. The 240Z’s sleek styling, modern engineering, relatively low price, and impressive performance struck a major chord with the public. Positive response from both buyers and the motoring press was immediate, and dealers soon had long waiting lists for the “Z”.
As a “halo” car, the 240Z broadened the acceptance of Japanese car-makers beyond their econobox image. Datsun’s growing dealer network compared to limited production imported sports cars manufactured by Jaguar, BMW, Porsche, Alfa Romeo, and Fiat ensured both easy purchase and ready maintenance.
All variants of the S30 have a four-wheel independent suspension consisting of MacPherson struts in front (borrowed from the Nissan Laurel C30) and Chapman struts in back. Front disc brakes and rear drums were standard.
This car has been sold new in July of 1972 in Seaside, California and came to its second owner in Modesto, Ca. in 2003 with 77k miles on it.
This is a mainly un-restored and largely original paint vehicle. The rear deck lid and the front right fender have been painted (little discoloration) and some other small areas may have been touched up, but the car has not been apart for a full paint job and most panels’ measure original paint. The body is straight with excellent gaps and shut lines and the original orange (918) still looks amazing and is very presentable.
The 2nd owner used the car as a daily driver and had the engine rebuilt in 2005 at 110k miles. The work was executed by Rebello Racing, one of the premier Datsun Z specialists in the country. The numbers matching engine was completely rebuild using a 280Z crank increasing the the displacement to 2800cc. All paperwork available.
The car is extremely strong and runs fantastic. They also upgraded the transmission to a 5 speed from a 1982 280ZX which makes it a perfect cruiser on the freeway as well. Little over 30k miles on the rebuild.
Other modifications include a Dynomax muffler and Eibach sport springs and sway bar which lower the car about 1 inch. The ride is very solid. Stainless steel brake lines and heavy duty stainless heater core in original tank. After market AC.
All modifications have been done tasteful and not to take away from the original visual appearance. Engine has original SU carbs, air cleaner etc. Nobody can tell it is a 2.8l inside.
Original 4 speed shifter mounted as well, nobody can tell, that it is a 5 speed car.
The interior is one of the best, original interiors we have seen on a Z. Perfect dash, all gauges work (except clock), everything lights up at night, original working radio, original carpeting with some wear and super rare original Z floor mats. Seats, door panels and headliner are perfect!
The car has zero rust issues. The rear bumper has one small area of flaking chrome.
The car is straight, un-welded and dry.
There are original brochures, window sticker, all kinds of period magazine snippets, tons of stuff in the folders.
The car currently sits on original steel wheels with flawless hubcaps with older Continental tires. The car also comes with a set of ultra-rare 14×6.5 Minilite wheels, no replicas but the real deal “Made in England” originals from the 70’s with very good tires on it. A box full of extras (various smaller and larger parts) come with it.
This is a survivor type Z with some patina and some imperfections in paint but still presents extremely well. Mechanically fully sorted and excellent!
The car comes with all original books and manuals, tools, jack and spare tire.
