1965 (MY66) Porsche 911 Coupe
1965 (MY66) Porsche 911 Coupe
We are pleased to offer, on behalf of a long-standing client, this exceptional early 1965 (MY66) Porsche 911 Coupé.
For many years, 2shores has specialized in selecting only the finest air-cooled Porsches. This very early 911 is a prime example of that philosophy.
Production of the 911 began in September 1964, with the first cars reaching the United States in early 1965. These initial models featured the 130 hp Type 901/01 2.0-litre flat-six, four or five-speed Type 901 gearbox, and the pure design language of Ferdinand “Butzi” Porsche. Early cars carry a distinct character and detail set that later 911s no longer possess.
This example, VIN 302164, was finished in Light Ivory (6404) over red leatherette. Delivered new on 31 August 1965 to its first owner, Mr. Dunham of Massachusetts, it remained in the same family for many years before passing to a subsequent owner who added only a little over 1,000 miles during nearly two decades of ownership. Research indicates just three previous owners in total. The car shows only 57,000 original miles and received a single repaint in the 1990s, executed in the correct Light Ivory.
In 2012 the Porsche returned to Germany, where it underwent a careful, documented mechanical restoration by a respected Porsche specialist. The engine, transmission and Solex carburetors were fully rebuilt, while new brakes and suspension were fitted. The clear objective throughout was to preserve maximum originality.
The result is a highly original early 911 that still displays significant and desirable patina. It retains its original fenders with the characteristic wide bead/lip, visible (never-restored) seams on the B-pillars — an extremely rare feature — stamped headlight buckets, and the rare wedges on both side windows. The original and complete Webasto heating system remains in place, including all underbody components. Further originality includes Sekurit glass all around (except the windshield), the original oil tank and mounting bracket, original heater boxes, original seat adjustment knobs, and full-chrome bumpers.
Lighting is correct US-spec throughout, with Bosch lenses for the headlights, turn signals and brake lights. The stamped steering gear carries a metal tag dated 8/65 on the steering damper, while the body itself is stamped 15/65.
Fully numbers-matching (engine, transmission and Webasto unit) and accompanied by its original Kardex and Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, this 911 forms part of a larger private Porsche collection in Germany.
A rare opportunity to acquire one of the purest and most characterful early 911 Coupés available — a car that combines correct mechanical restoration with an outstanding level of originality that is seldom seen today.
